Abstract

Background: Allergic rhinitis is a common inflammatory nasal mucosal disorder. Inferior turbinate hypertrophy may influence symptom severity and response to intranasal corticosteroid therapy. Objective was to evaluate clinical and anatomical correlates of nasal symptoms and assess changes following intranasal beclomethasone dipropionate in allergic rhinitis patients. Methods: This quasi-experimental pre–post study was conducted at the Department of ENT, KRL Hospital, Islamabad (Oct 2024–Jun 2025). A total of 960 consecutive patients with allergic rhinitis were enrolled. Sneezing, rhinorrhoea, nasal obstruction, and post-nasal drip were assessed in relation to inferior turbinate hypertrophy. Patients received one-week intranasal beclomethasone dipropionate. Symptom severity was evaluated using a modified Total Nasal Symptom Score and data was analyzed on SPSS-24. Results: Runny nose (94.8%) and sneezing (88.5%) were most prevalent, followed by nasal obstruction (82.3%). Moderate disease was observed in 43.8% of patients. Inferior turbinate hypertrophy was significantly associated with nasal obstruction. Post-treatment symptom severity declined, with greater improvement in rhinorrhoea and sneezing than nasal obstruction. Conclusion: Inferior turbinate hypertrophy was associated with greater symptom severity. Intranasal beclomethasone dipropionate significantly improved symptoms, and the modified Total Nasal Symptom Score effectively assessed treatment response.
